I was encouraged to apply by a lab member and the entire experience was very encouraging. UW really values community-building and hard-work so I was very honored to receive this award. Meeting students who had a common goal of improving the community in such diverse roles was especially exciting.
My mentor, Danny Sahtoe, left our lab to start his own group in the Netherlands at the Hubrecht Institute. Danny was a great mentor to me and we spent nearly our entire day at the lab bench. I wanted to make him a small version of our bench he could take with him anywhere in the world as a little memory of our time together.
